Performance
Putting on the D700-2017 was not very straight forward; to get maximum comfort and sound quality you need to adjust the ‘height’ of the earpiece and find the correct size of the plastic earbuds for you. Whilst you can twist the earpiece to find the best angle for you, unlike conventional earphones that gets jammed into the earhole, the D700-2017 is designed to just sit at the entrance of your ears. The downside to this, due to the sheer small size of the earpieces, is that you are not going to get much bass in your music, and a lot of background noise.
Having said that, both the treble and mid-tones are well balanced in terms of smoothness and accuracy. The treble from the D700-2017 is sharp without sounding too harsh and complements the mid-tones very well which itself is rounded and pronounced.
I sweat a hell of a lot during my workouts, and the D700-2017 did its job of resisting all that wetness which is comforting to know that I won’t be having to replace these earphones for my workouts for a while.
Having the inline remote control placed somewhere below your right ear, towards the back of my neck did take some time to get used to. As mentioned previously, the buttons are responsive and the even though the placement of the microphone is well away from my mouth, it picked up my voice both accurately and sharply for calls, with surprisingly not much background noise.
Verdict & Conclusion
Even with the lack of bass the Syllable D700-2017 delivers very good audio quality, and add to that the responsive controls, very good voice microphone and IPX4 certification, it does tick a lot of boxes for a lot of sporty types. The design of the D700-2017 is a bit of a mixed bag and definitely takes some time to get used to, especially having the earbuds sit at the entrance of your ears rather than plugged into them.
The build quality is excellent, Syllable has chosen to use durable materials which complements the way these D700-2017 are meant to be used. The call functions work surprisingly well with the microphone placed far away from your mouth, with the call recipient not getting much volume drops.
