Load Temps
At full load, temperatures reached a high 61 degree Celsius, which is quite high but falls within our expectations thanks to the included full cover all copper heatsink. I’ve seen higher temperatures on other Gen4 SSDs … so 61 degree Celsius is OK.
High SSD temperatures may affect performance or even system crash, so we recommend extra cooling where possible … and you could consider the Silverstone ECM24-ARGB PCIE 4 Adapter Card, which comes with a massive heatsink and feature ARGB lighting effects too.
Verdict and Conclusion
If you’ve got a PC system, gaming or otherwise, powered by a 3rd Gen Ryzen processor (Matisse), along with either a X570 or B550 motherboard … then there’s no excuse not to get yourself a M.2 PCIE Gen4 SSD.
The increase in read/write performance is just too hard to ignore. Loading Windows 10 is literally instant, and if you’re a content creator like me, you will love the speed especially when you’re editing and saving large video files.
During our CrystalMark test, the peak read speed reached a high of 4,861 MB/sec, just shy of the advertised 5,000 MB/sec, but an excellent score. While sequential write speed was bang-on, reaching a high of 2,500 MB/sec. So no complaints here.
The excellent performance of the Gigabyte AORUS NVMe Gen4 SSD is all thanks to Phison’s reputable E16 SSD controller. You can find out more at Phison’s webiste.
And finally, what makes the Gigabyte AORUS NVMe Gen4 SSD stand out above rest, is the large, brightly-coloured, full cover copper heatsink, which helps to reduce temperatures during full load.
Pricewise, the Gigabyte AORUS NVMe Gen4 SSD costs around $119, which is pretty affordable considering, but only get 500GB capacity. However having said that, you are getting the latest PCIE Gen4 SSD that offers phenomenal read/write speeds. Please note … a X570/B550 motherboard is required, along with a 3rd Gen Ryzen processor (Matisse) to take advantage of the PCIE 4.0 standards.
You can buy the Gigabyte AORUS NVMe Gen4 SSD 500GB right now for around USD $119 at Amazon – https://amzn.to/33Klh9o.
If budget allows, get yourself a 1TB version. Apparently, the 1TB version offers even higher write speeds of up to ~4,400MB/sec (according to Gigabyte).
Pros:
- Read speed: 5,000 Mb/sec, Write speed: ~2,500Mb/sec
- Phison E16 SSD Controller
- PCI-E Gen4x4
- Massive full cover copper heatsink
- Supports NVMe v1.3
- 5-Year Warranty
Cons:
- Not I can think of
Final Thoughts
If you’ve got a X570 or B550 motherboard, plus a 3rd Gen Ryzen processor (Matisse), and want to dabble with PCI Gen4, then the Gigabyte AORUS NVMe Gen4 SSD 500GB is a great choice as a fast boot drive. It offers excellent read/write performance and comes with an impressive, full cover copper heatsink, and it’s all backed-up by a 5-year warranty.
