Specifications and Features

Features

  • Optimized for read-intensive applications (DC500R) Responsiveness resulting from low latency and consistent I/O performance delivers the QoS that businesses need for demanding read-centric workloads.
  • Optimized for mixed-use applications (DC500M) An exceptional balance of consistent I/O delivery and high read and write IOPS performance to manage a wide range of transactional workloads.
  • Reduce application latencies Data centers that host databases and various web-based applications can leverage the predictable I/O and latency performance.
  • Data Integrity Protection ECC protection with advanced read/disturb management safeguards against data corruption for end-to-end data protection.
  • On-board (PLP) power loss protection Reduce the possibility of data loss and/or corruption upon ungraceful power failure via power capacitors and firmware.

The DC500 SSD is available in two versions, with the letter R and M. R stands for read-centric while M for mixed-load. There is a significant difference between these two SSD, and for our tests, we’ve picked the M version, which has a higher write bandwidth and performance in random write operations and a higher endurance. On the other hand, the M version costs more, so you may want one or another depending on the needs.

Both our drives arrived in perfect condition. CrystalDiskMark is reporting that everything is fine and both SSD have around 34-35°C idle. During work, their temperature is not getting high, and there are no problems with thermal throttling. The specification says that the maximum operating temperature is 70°C. We haven’t seen anything even close, so we don’t worry about the DC500M during longer, higher load work.

The DC500M is using TLC 3D NAND. As far as we wish to see MLC, most enterprise drives already use TLC with improved endurance and various technologies, preventing faster cell wearing. On the other hand, desktop SSDs are more often using QLC NAND, which is offering anything between 30% and 50% shorter life. Here is why we wouldn’t use QLC NAND for professional solutions or even home or office NAS/DAS.

Nearly all SSD manufacturers added farming/mining to their warranty terms. This is because of Chia crypto-currency, which can be mined on HDD/SSD. You may lose the warranty because of that, or the warranty will be based on the amount of TB written instead of a warranty period, which in Kingston SSD is 5 years.

Product Photos and a Closer Look

The package is close to what we can see in other Kingston SSD. It’s cardboard with blister-type protection for the SSD. It’s enough to deliver all the necessary info about the drive and protect the drive itself for the time of transport. It also presents nicely in a retail store and doesn’t take much space.

The DC500M and DC500R SSD look like any SATA 2.5″ SSD. The enclosure is made of metal alloy what already shows it’s a higher series as most new SATA SSDs have an exterior made of plastic. On the front (upper) side, there is a large label that is saying everything we may need about the SSD.

The DC500M is in a standard SATA size so that it can be installed in all types of personal computers and servers, NAS, DAS, and other storage types.

On the next page, we will take a closer look at test results. Let’s go there as the results are exceptional.
