Conclusion and Verdict
In the testing you can clearly see the Play microSDXC shines in read speeds. The write speeds do have the capabilities of hitting high numbers but in every test suite I ran the write speeds always fluctuated. Not really a downside when the main purpose of the game drive is to read files as fast as possible. But keep in mind that you are going to rely on this drive for a lot of writes then you will notice the fluctuating speeds.
If you are going to be using the card for a Nintendo switch or something similar then as long as the card is capable of:
- UHS-I (Ultra High Speed Phase I) compatible
- Transfer speed 60 – 95 MB/sec (the higher the transfer speed, the better gameplay experience on Nintendo Switch)
If the card meets both of these requirements then you should be good to go!
I used the fastest USB (USB 3.2) to test the drive. Keep in mind if you use USB 2.0 or a reader only capable of 2.0, you will be limited to transfer speeds those connections are capable of. I tested this exact card with a 2.0 reader and was consistently getting write speeds around 20MB/s. That just goes to show you the extreme bottle neck you can face with controllers. I used the port directly on the back of my motherboard so I could test with 3.2. All the tests showed very consistent results!
