Conclusion and Verdict
At the time of this review the drive is going for 89 dollars. That’s about .17 cent per gig. That’s a pretty decent price for a portable drive. The housing seems durable enough. One side is aluminum and the other side is plastic. So the aluminum side kind of acts like a heatsink and this drive stayed extremely cool during all the testing. The max temp I recorded was 48 degrees Celsius. The drive was warm to the touch but wasn’t too hot where you could still comfortably hold it in your hand. The cable is a little longer on the SL200 compared to the SL100. That one was extremely short. This cable is about a 18″ long. That is a lot better but still a pain if your only 3.1 port is on the back of your motherboard. This drive exceeds the manufactures speed ratings. This drive has the right price for the performance you are getting. All the test went smooth and the drive looks be able to hold up the portable use it is intended for!
The transfer speeds advertised are consistent with the testing. I used the fastest USB (USB 3.1) to test the drive. Keep in mind if you use USB 3.0 or less you will be limited to transfer speeds those connections are capable of. I will be keeping this drive around for a while for sure. The compact size and amazing speeds make this external drive easy to travel with and with no worries of data loss because it was bouncing around my bag. If I had one complaint it would be the length of the cables. I used the port directly on the back of my motherboard so I could test with 3.1. So I would have liked to of seen longer cables for that reason. All the tests showed very consistent results!
I never really tried out the DataVault Lite software. That is a nice of them to throw in with the purchase of the SL200. If you don’t already have a suite that protects your files, then you get a little bonus with this drive.
