Verdict and Conclusion
As we’ve seen the performance is quite good. Compared to the old Vertex 3 it is very impressive indeed.
As always, the Vertex 3 series looks quite nice. Nothing new there, still awesome.
As usual, it’s completely silent, that’s nice too.
The main discussion point is price. At the current price of ~$215 there is stiff competition from Samsung.
They have a drive that is a bit faster and a bit cheaper. The big difference is that the Samsung drive uses TLC cache where OCZ uses MLC. That gives the OCZ drive’s cache a lifespan roughly three times as long.
Is it worth it to you to pay a little bit more for a little bit slower performance in order to get significantly stronger cache? That’s the question. Personally, I’m OK with that tradeoff. It’s not ideal of course, but little is in this world.
I’m very happy to see OCZ bringing new 20nm flash to the excellent Vertex3 platform, it’s a logical and intelligent move in my opinion.
To summarize, there are pros:
- Quite fast.
- Completely silent.
- Looks great.
- Long lived MLC flash.
There are cons too:
- A little bit more expensive than the competition.
- A little bit slower than the competition.
Final Words. Do the pros make the cons worthwhile? I think yes, and since I’m the one who gets to put a rating on this review, I’m giving it a 9.1/10. It could be better, but not by a lot. If you’re after a solid price/performance/lifespan 240GB drive give the OCZ Vertex 3.20 240GB a hard look!
