Specifications and Features
We had a chance to review Patriot Hellfire. You may wonder why after couple of months Patriot release slower M.2 SSD. One of the reasons is lower price so more users can enjoy fast M.2 SSD. Other reason is that the Scorch works on PCIe Gen3 x2 while the Hellfire requires PCIe x4 to work. There are some motherboards which support only x2 mode and then you won’t find anything much faster than Patriot Scorch series SSD.
Looking at other specification we have high performance and quite large cache of 256MB. Considering there is also Phison 5008 controller, we can expect good results in tests but that we will check in some time.
Our drive works without issues. On the ASRock X370 Gaming ITX we didn’t need any drivers to install Windows 10 and run all the tests.
One thing worth to notice is work temperature. 49°C is typical temperature during normal work what is lower than most competitive NVMe drives.
Package and Closer Look
Patriot Scorch arrived in a retail package what looks similar to that of USB flash drives or SD cards. It’s quite small and doesn’t need much more.
Package is well described so we know what are we buying. I guess that most our readers are ordering computer hardware in online stores so what is on the package is less important. What’s important is inside.
Inside the package we will find 256GB SSD in M.2 2280 form factor so the most popular M.2 SSD size which is supported by most desktop motherboards and also laptops.
There is not much to see. Everything is covered by labels which stick pretty good so I don’t want to remove them and risk damaging the drive. All what is hidden is in the specification so again, Phison 5008 controller and 256MB of cache.
Regardless what is on the PCB, we expect good results so let’s move to the next page to take a look what the Scorch has to offer.
