Conclusion and Verdict
The VPR400 RGB Gen4 SSD is a perfect example of form over function. And there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. While it may be bummer we don’t get 7000MBs speeds. None of those 7000MBs drive can offer the level of cool this drive has. Even though the speeds this drive is capable of isn’t something to knock either. It still has decent speeds. Read 5000/Write 4800 respectively. You also get 800 terabytes written and a 5-year limited warranty. This is still blazing fast, just nowhere near the full capabilities of a Gen4x4 M.2. If you are buying this drive, you are mostly interested in the RGB, and it will not disappoint. The RGB is plentiful and looks pretty awesome. The software has enough options for you to play around with or you can utilize your motherboards software if it features the LED control of the M.2.
Even with the lights on and throwing test after test at this drive we were still within the safe temperature level of a max of 70 degrees. We did a full linear test and the speeds never throttled. Even if you find yourself driving this drive beyond its limits you don’t need to worry about causing any damage. Because it features a built-in technology that will throttle the drive even before the heavy throttle kicks in. We didn’t see any of this even though we pushed test after test at this thing. The Innogrit IG5220 Gen4x4 controller is new and from what I can tell it is a decent controller. Is this drive worth the price? It depends on how much you want form over function. So, only you can justify the cost of awesome RGB. If I had to put a price on what the RGB is costing you compared to a drive with similar speed and specs. It would be somewhere between 20-30 dollars? This isn’t exact due to some variables but its close. I like RGB so if you asked me, I am going to say. Of course, that level of awesomeness is worth it!
Even though we are starting to see a lot of M.2 drive reach the market with 7000MBs speeds. I am not going to list this as a downside necessarily because you should be fully aware of that at this point of the review. But this drive offers something those don’t! Sweet, Sweet RGB!
