PNY XLR8 CS3150 M.2 NVMe PCIe Gen 5×4 1TB SSD Review (with RGB Heatsink)

The Box and Packaging

There’s not much in the box. No manual, no installation guide, just the SSD itself.

The PNY CS3150 SSD uses the standard M.2 2280 form factor. It’s quite large compared to other SSDs due to big heatsink, and weigh in at around 53g. You’ll find the two cooling fans on either end of the heatsink.

To power the cooling fans and the RGB lighting, you’ll find a cable attached tohe SSD with a USB header/connector at the end. This needs to be plugged in to the USB header on the motherboard.

Installation

To take full advantage of PCIE Gen5 speeds, you’ll need a motherboard that supports this standard such as an Asus Strix Z790-E Gaming WiFi motherboard.

During installation, we had to lay out the cable from the SSD along the left side of the motherboard to reach one of the USB headers on the motherboard. It’s not ideal, but manageable.

Once eveything is place and you power up yuor system, the RGB lighting turns on right away.
