Today, we’ll be taking a look at the Synology Diskstation DS215+ NAS (Network Attached Storage). NAS devices have been around for a number of years, and they are extremely handy for storing and sharing files within one’s own network. During years prior to NAS, many users used to setup a standalone desktop/server for this purpose, and it can be costly as well as complex to setup.
Fast forward to 2016 and NAS devices have now become widely available at affordable prices. The new range of NAS devices are easy to setup and offers a wide range of features and functions previously unavailable, such as iTunes sharing, media streaming and even the option to setup a print, FTP or Web server.
The Synology Diskstation DS215+ NAS is powered by a dual-core Annapurna Labs Alpine AL-212 CPU running at 1.4GHz with 1GB DDR3 ram and offers two bay storage upto a maximum capacity of 16TB. The unit features a screwless design setup, which means you don’t need any extra tools to mount the hard drives. You can setup the unit in a matter of minutes … seriously! As far as features go … it comes with Audio Station, Cloud Station, Cloud Sync, Directory Server, DNS Server, Download Station, iTunes Server, Mail Server, Mail Station, Media Server, Photo Station, Surveillance Station … the list goes on, too many to list!

To test the Synology Diskstation DS215+ NAS, we’ll be using 2 x Western Digital Red NAS – WD30EFRX 3.0TB drives (with 64MB cache). These hard drives are specifically designed and optimized for NAS usage, so we should be able to get some decent transfer rates for both read and write speed.
