A Closer look
So here we can see the packaging of the Synology DS412+. It is a fairly simple packaging, in light blue with icons of some of the features of this NAS. It is kept simple but I like that.
Then on the side of the box, we see some other features of the device, but there are far to many to show on the box, unless Synology used a huge box then maybe…
Then when opening the box, we find a smaller box with the cables, accesories and information. We have a CD with the DSM software, a quick installation guide and some screws for securing and/or installing 2.5″ drives
Then onto the cables: 2 RJ45 Ethernet cables (for Link aggression), Power adapter and a power cable. I really like that the two Ethernet cables are included.
Then onto the actual device, the DiskStation 412+ It is a 4 bay NAS, wich means there are 4 hard drive bays and they are covered by an easy to remove plastic cover. on the right side we have 5 LEDs, a USB 2.0 port and the power button. The first LED shows the status of the system, while the other 4 are for the hard drive status’s.
Here you see the drive bays; they are really easy to remove and are hot-swappable. Installing drives is tool-less for 3.5″ drives but you have the option to secure them with screws. 2.5″ drives on the other hand need to be secured to the drive bay.
On both sides of the device you can read “Synology”. This is pretty cool because it is engraved in the device, which results in better airflow plus it looks cool too.
Then on the back of the device we have 2 92mm fans to cool the NAS, 2 RJ-45 Ethernet ports, 2 USB 3.0 ports, 1 eSATA port, a kensington lock and the power input. The device is also really quiet in default mode, which is great.
