Testing
My computer and my NAS are hooked up to a TP-Link 1000mbps switch which has an an Ethernet cable straight from the modem. My computer is a homebuild Windows 8.1 PC powered by a 4th generation Intel Core I5 Haswell processor running on a Samsung 840 series 250GB. For testing I copied some files back and forth between my PC and the NAS. I will copy a large folder (12.8GB) and a small folder (227MB).
- Large folder with video files: To copy 12.8GB from my SSD to my DS412+ it took 2 Min and 8 seconds with an avarage speed of +/-100MB/s
- Small folder with audio files: To copy 227MB from my SSD to my DS412+ it took around 2 seconds with an avarager speed of +/- 100MB/s
So in terms of speed I can not really complain, also I really recommend a gigbyte switch (around 100 or more MB/s) over a 100mbps switch (around 15MB/s)
Here you can see my NAS setup.
Verdict
So that was the review of the Synology DiskStation 412+, I hope you enjoyed it and let us check out the pros and cons of the device now. The good, Synology included two Ethernet cables (Link-Aggresion), the NAS is really fast and also really quiet, it runs on Synology’s latest Operating System DiskStation Manager 5.0 or DSM 5.0 in short and the option to install a lot of packages (apps) is great. The biggest con (and actually the only one too) is that the device is expensive 500 euros ins’t exactly cheap.
Pros:
– 2 Ethernet cable included
– Really Fast and Quiet
– DSM 5.0
– Lots of packages to install
Cons:
– Expensive
Final Words:
If you are looking for a fast and quiet NAS with tons of options and the ability to contain 4 drives, then the DS412+ is really something to consider. Ok it is pretty expensive but you also get something in return. I also really love DSM 5.0 it is a beautiful OS and in comparison with competition also really easy in use. That is why the Synology DiskStation 412+ deserves the FunkyKit Editors choice award…
