Verdict and Conclusion
When AMD announced the Radeon RX 7900 GRE last year in 2023, it was only meant for the Asia market to celebrate the year of the Rabbit, hence the acronym GRE – Golden Rabbit Edition. But for some unknown reason it was delayed, and was eventually launched globally in February 2024. Why? well rumour has it, AMD wanted to release a card that could compete directly against Nvidia’s recently launched GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER (Jan 2024).
Whatever the reason, one thing’s for sure … the Radeon RX 7900 GRE is aimed at the mid-range market with a very attractive MSRP of only USD $549, matching Nvidia’s GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER.
So what can we say about ASRock Radeon RX 7900 GRE Steel Legend 16GB OC Graphics Card? Well, it performed as we expected. It sits nicely between the Radeon RX 7800 XT and the higher-end RX 7900 XTX.
The ASRock Steel Legend’s all-white design makes this card extremely attractive for anyone who wants build an all-white gaming PC.
During our tests, we used our usual test rig, which is comprised of an Intel Core i9-14900K and Asus ROG Strix Z790-E Gaming WiFi motherboard, along with 32GB of DDR5-7200 ram. With all settings on AUTO, we got really good scores in most of our benchmarks, including a decent score of 4,982 for BaseMark GPU, an AMD FSR 2 score of 69.54 fps and a Passmark 10 GPU score of 35,613.
For 3DMark Timespy and Firestrike, it produced a score of 21,693 and 40,441 respectively. Next, for Speedway and Port Royal, it produce a decent score of 4,256 and 11,865 respectively.
For Unigine’s Valley benchmark, we got a respectable score of of 9,237 and a Final Fantasy benchmark score of 17,308. For Superposition 1080p extreme and optimized 4K, we got decent scores of 12,124 and 15,665 respectively.
And for our final test, Cyberpunk 2077 with Ray Tracing Overdrive/Psycho settings at 4K, we got a score of 21.33 fps.
As you can see from the results, the ASRock Radeon RX 7900 GRE Steel Legend 16GB OC is a very capable graphics card, and it should be more than enough to satisfy most gamers, who wants a solid 1440p gaming experience, with the option for the occasional 4K gaming. Its performance is all thanks to its factory-overclocked GPU with a Boost Clock speed of up to 2,333 MHz and a Game Clock of 1972 MHz.
For cooling, the card feature a triple fan design with 3 striped ring fans, a reinforced metal frame and stylish metal backplate, which all helps in cooling the graphics card. Full load temperatures of GPU and hotspot reached a high of 62 degrees and 83 degrees Celsius, respectively. This is well below what we expected.
No gaming card is complete without RGB! And you’ll be glad to know that this card comes with integrated ARGB LEDs which lights up as soon as you switch on your system. The ARGB LEDs can be synchronized with your ASRock motherboards that support Polychrome SYNC. If you don’t want the ARGB LEDs to light up, you can always turn it on or off via a switch which is located near the 2 x 8-pin PCIE power connectors.
Monitor output includes 3 x DisplayPorts v2.1 and 1 x HDMI 2.1 port, which is plenty much standard these days. Don’t forget to enable FreeSync on the Adrenalin Software if you own a FreeSync monitor, otherwise you won’t be getting all the benefits of the graphics card or monitor.
Currently, the availability of the ASRock Radeon RX 7900 GRE Steel Legend 16GB OC graphics card is very low. If you can find one, expect to pay around USD $600-650. Final Thoughts
The ASRock Radeon RX 7900 GRE Steel Legend 16GB OC is a very capable graphics card that offers good performance for the price. It’s aimed at the mid-range GPU market, for gamers who wants a decent 1440p gaming experience, with the option for the occasional 4K gaming. It’s also aesthetically attractive and comes with plenty of RGB too!
