Verdict and Conclusion
The HIS Radeon 7790 is quite the card for its size. The size is one thing I find very silly. HIS could have done us all a favor and cut the end off the plastic shroud.
I understand that they are re-using parts from other cards but as-is it is just wasting a decent chunk of space. Granted the PCI-E power connector is on the end of the card so it extends out but in an HTPC envionment that extra inch could be the difference between the card fitting and not fitting.
At stock clocks the card does a good job. Games are playable at max settings in 1080p but can run into hickups. I would suggest turning down settings like AA due to this card only having 1GB of ram onboard.
The one huge bonus is the voltage control on this card. I was able to squeeze another 75mhz out of this card just from raising the voltage a tad bit. The card was even able to get over 1300mhz through benchmarks but it got too hot on the stock cooler.
Shopping around on the internets the HIS Radeon 7790 can be found for $130 or so. I have to say that is a very solid price for the kind of performance you get. Adding in the voltage control abilities you surely can’t go wrong with the HIS Radeon 7790 Turbo in an HTPC sort of environment. Compared with the Previously reviewed 2GB Radeon 7790 I would suggest saving yourself $30-40 and getting the 1GB version of the card unless you are planning on running Crossfire.
Good:
- Good cooler
- Voltage Control!
- GPU and Memory overclock nicely
- Good games package
- iTurbo software
- Price
Bad:
- Runs warm at full-tilt
- Shroud is too long
Final Words
As an HTPC card the HIS Radeon 7790 Turbo sure does a solid job. Performance is very good for the price and power consumption is almost non-existent. I certainly would not be disappointed to use this card for casual and some serious gaming. Once you throw in another 10% of performance from overclocking the card it seems like HIS does have a winner on its hands.
