HIS Radeon HD 7870 (2GB GDDR5) Review

The Box and Packaging

Every time HIS sends a new product I always look forward to the box. There is just something super cool about the sword on the front of the box that I like. Looking over the box you get your standard features listed all over the place. 2GB GDDR5, check. PCI-express 3.0, check. eyefinity, check. The board even lets you know that this card is the GHz edition. That means the card is clocked at 1GHz core speed out of the box.

The card itself and the HIS cooler

If you read the Radeon 7850 review, you will notice that the cards look pretty much the same. With the heatsink they look the same. Once you remove the heatsink and look under it they change it up a bit. The memory IC’s used on this card are the same as the 7850 and rated the same, but you get a PCB that has voltage control. Unfortunately there are no heatsinks for the memory or VRMs which is disapointing.

The heatsink is a HDT sort of design where it is a couple of heatpipes that directly touch the die of the GPU. A downside to these sorts of heatsinks is that they have a tendency to have skyrocketing temperatures once a large heat load is applied.
