MSI GeForce RTX 4080 SUPER 16G GAMING X SLIM Review

Inside the box you’ll find an envolope with the user guide/warranty, a 3 x 8-pin to 16-pin 12VHPWR adapter cable, and a handy graphics card holder to prevent sag.

A Closer Look

The card also comes with a solid metal backplate giving it structural stability and protection. The included graphics card holder provides better reinforcement, and prevents that ugly-looking sag due to the weight of the graphics card.

The 16-pin 12VHPWR power connector is located on the center of the graphics card. You’ll also find the Dual BIOS Gaming/Silent switch next to this connector. This switch allows users to get the best gaming performance or enjoy silent operation.

According to Nvidia, the GeForce RTX 4080 SUPER has TBP (or total board power) of around 320W, so we recommend a minimum power supply of 850W or higher. For video output, there’s 2 x DisplayPort v1.4a and 2 x HDMI 2.1a ports.

For cooling, it comes with MSI’s TRI FROZR 3 thermal design, which includes core heatpipes for maximum contact between the GPU and heatsink, as well as Torx Fan 5 – featuring fan blades linked by ring arcs, to help stabilize and maintain high-pressure airflow.

The card is slimmer than most GeForce RTX 4080 SUPER we’ve come across, but it still uses up 3 PCIE slot space.

Installation

There was no issues during our installation. This graphics card is slimmer than the GeForce RTX 4080 SUPER from Gigabyte, so it should fit in most ATX cases.

We used an Asus Strix Z790-E Gaming motherboard, along with an Intel Core i9-14900K @ default clock speed and 32GB of DDR5-7400 ram.

On the top left side of the graphics card you’ll find the MSI logo, which lights up when the system is powered up. Disappointingly, there are no RGB lighting on the cooling fans.

Important word of advice. Make sure the 12VHPWR cable is SECURELY connected to the graphics card. Failing to do so will cause major issues/damage to the card.
