Cyberpunk 2077 Benchmark (4K – Ray Tracing: OverDrive)

CD PROJEKT RED released an update (v2.21) for Cyberpunk 2077 which includes their Ray Tracing: Overdrive option with RTX on and DLSS3 enabled. It’s incredibly demanding on your hardware.

Verdict and Conclusion

Being a gamer in 2025 is tough! If you’re after a decent mainstream graphics card for 1440p gaming, you’re going to have to spend well over USD $500 or more. But more recently, thanks to scalpers, prices of graphics cards, to put it mildly … has gone abolutely bonkers! With high-end GeForce RTX 5090 series cards going for USD $4,000+, while RTX 5080 and RTX 5070 Ti cards are now nearly double their MSRP.

The newly launched GeForce RTX 5070, which is aimed at the mainstream market didn’t escape the madness either, with cards hitting USD $1,000 (the orginal MSRP is $549). So sad! I have one thing to say to Nvidia … please do something about it! Rant over … let’s move on.

The GeForce RTX 5070 is meant to target the mainstream market at a decent price point, so let’s see what this new GPU has to offer. For the price, you get less CUDA cores, a total of 6,144, but you still get 5th Gen Tensor Cores (988 AI TOPS), 4th Gen RT Cores (94 TFLOPS), as well as supporting the latest DLSS4 and PCIE 5.0 interface. You also get 12GB of GDDR7 VRAM on a 192-Bit memory bus running at speed of 28 Gbps.

The MSI GeForce RTX 5070 12G GAMING TRIO OC uses a slightly overclocked GPU with a boost speed of 2,610 MHz (the default is 2,510 MHz), and you can get Extreme Performance up to 2625 MHz by using MSI Center and Afterburner software.

During our tests, we used a Gigabyte Z790 AORUS Pro X motherboard, along with an Intel Core i9-14900K processor @ default clock speed, as well as 48GB of Viper Gaming Extreme 5 DDR5-8000 ram. We got decent scores in all of our benchmarks, including a score of 8,435 for Basemark’s Relic of Life, and a Geekbench GPU score of 188,629. For Unigine’s Valley benchmark, we got a score of 8,138, and a Final Fantasy benchmark score of 20,788. Passmark 11 GPU score was 33,921.

Next, we have Superposition 1080p extreme and optimized 4K benchmarks. We got excellent scores of 12,355 and 17,344 respectively. For 3DMark Steel Nomad and Speed Way, we got amazing scores of 5,087 and 5,961 respectively. For Port Royal, and Time Spy, it produced an impressive scores of 14,279 and 22,866 respectively. And lastly, we got a DirectX Raytracing score of 58.41 fps and a DLSS score of 124.21 fps.

For our Cyberpunk 2077 tests, CD PROJEKT RED released their new update (v2.21), which includes a new benchmark mode. It features their Ray Tracing: Overdrive option with RTX on and DLSS4 enabled. It’s incredibly demanding on your hardware, so we added it to our benchmark tests (see above). The MSI GeForce RTX 5070 produced an score of 39.37 fps at 4K. Not too bad.

Power consumption at full load was as advertised, with the total graphics power draw of around 250.93W. So issues here. According to Nvidia, the total graphics power (TGP) for the GeForce RTX 5070 is around 250W, so we recommend a minimum power supply of 750W or higher.

For cooling, the card features MSI’s Tri Frozr 4 thermal design featuring StormForce cooling fans for improved airflow, Core heatpipes, Nickel-plated Copper Baseplate, and a solid metal backplate. All of these great cooling features helps to bring the GPU temperature to a low 62 degrees Celsius at full load.

Video outputs include 3 x DisplayPort 2.1b and 1 x HDMI 2.1b, allowing you to display up to 4K @ 480Hz or 8K @ 120Hz with DSC, Gaming VRR, HDR. This is something that was lacking in the RTX 40 series, so it’s defintely an improvement.

As you all know AMD have recently launched their Radeon RX 9000 series of graphics cards, with many saying it’s an Nvidia killer (in terms of price/performance). So where does the GeForce RTX 5070 stand? Well, on a good day it beats the RTX 4070 for sure (but it defintely won’t give you RTX 4090 performance as previously suggested at the Nvidia’s launch event). As for the MSI GeForce RTX 5070 12G GAMING TRIO OC, thanks to its overclocked GPU, I would say performs about the same as the GeForce RTX 4070 Ti based on our benchmarks. It’s a tough choice to make, espeically when the Radeon RX 9070 XT and RX 9070 is priced at $599 and $549 respectively (MSRP).

You can buy the MSI GeForce RTX 5070 12G GAMING TRIO OC Graphics Card for around USD $649 from Newegg – https://tinyurl.com/mr3p89rf (prices have since gone up after we published the review).

Final Thoughts

If the MSI GeForce RTX 5070 12G GAMING TRIO OC graphics card was sold at MSRP prices (USD $650), then it’s definitely worth considering as a mainstream graphics card for gamers. It offers decent performance, great aesthetics, and can easily beat the RTX 4070 Ti thanks to its overclocked GPU. For this reason, we give it our recommended award.
